Undivided Devotion
2025-09-30
Tuesday: Proper 21, Year One · 1 Corinthians 7:32–40 (NRSV)
Today Paul uses marriage as a litmus test for our devotion to God. We may not be waiting for an imminent apocalypse, but his point still lands: audit your distractions. What in my life brings me nearer to God? Where am I most able to love? How do I center my life with the Living God within the parts of my week that consume the most time?
Paul is not ranking singleness over marriage. He is asking for undivided attention. Marriage can divide, and it can also become a school of mercy. Singleness can isolate, and it can also open a wide field for love. The question is not status but arrangement: which pattern lets love breathe?
Let us make it concrete. With God’s help, let us reorient our lives. Let us keep what serves love of God and neighbor. Let us release what is fear or status-keeping. Let us choose a path that forms our hearts toward the love of God.
