What this is
A companion for Morning/Evening Prayer (BCP 1979), Year One · Proper 21 · Sunday.
Read the appointed psalms and lessons in the NRSV.
At a glance
- Word for the week: Turn
- Breath prayer: Steady my steps, O God. Turn my hands toward mercy. Fill what is empty. Amen.
- Practice: With consent, accompany a neighbor to a probation appointment. Be present, unhurried, and helpful.
- Question to carry: What small turn will I make this week, and toward whom?
Readings (Year One · Proper 21 · Sunday)
- Morning Psalms: 66; 67
- Evening Psalms: 19; 46
- OT: 1 Kings 17:1–18
- NT: Acts 9:36–43 (Tabitha/Dorcas)
- Gospel: Luke 5:1–11 (Call of Simon Peter)
Reflection (brief)
A faithful turn is usually small: show up, share, listen, obey the next right thing.
Practice: Accompaniment (how-to)
- Ask first what would help (ride, waiting-room presence, note-taking).
- Arrive early, breathe the prayer above.
- Be present—no fixing or speeches; follow their lead.
- Afterward, debrief; if asked, help with the next small step (calendar, transit, childcare).
- Keep confidences.
Why this? Acts 9 shows mercy embodied in ordinary care. This practice trains our bodies toward the same.
Collect of the Day (Proper 21)
O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
